1. Use Natural Light

If possible, always use natural light when photographing your pet. Avoid flash, as it can not only cause red-eye but also frighten the animal. A room well-lit by a large window is a good alternative.

2. Keep the Eyes Sharp

Having sharp eyes is important in any kind of portrait photography. “Eyes are the window to the soul” and pets’ eyes can be very expressive.

3. Go to Them

It is very important that your pets feel comfortable and at ease, so instead of forcing them to come to you, go to them. The most important is to get down to their level; and show us the way they see the world! Sit on the floor or lie on your belly and remember to shoot from their eye level or below.

4. SIMPLE background

Keep a nice and simple background for the photograph. It will help the lighting also. You can set up a simpler environment such as in front of a wall or on a sofa. You can shoot the photograph outside as well.

5. Give Value to their Character

You know your pet better than anyone else and a successful picture is one that conveys the character of its subject. If you have a lazy cat, show him yawning. If your animal is a playful type, show him in action performing a favorite trick.

6. Go Macro

Fill the frame with your pet’s face and fur. Close-up shots often make beautiful animal portraits.

7. Support items

One of the most difficult things is to have your pet stay still. An easy trick is to hold your pet's favorite toy, treats, or anything that will grab your pet's attention while taking the photo. Make sure to place it at or slightly above their eyes. Place it above the camera or phone is a good place.

8. Plan your Photoshoot

Try to schedule the photo session when your animal is somewhat sleepy or has just woken up. It will be much easier to keep him still. If you want a more dynamic shot then pick up a time when your pet is energetic.

9. Be Patient

Pet photography requires a lot of patience. No matter how excited your furry friend is, if you are patient enough, you will have the opportunity to get a decent shot.
